The security business continues to grow as it keeps pace with new technology. Here are some trends that I think we will be seeing in 2020:

1. 5G Connection – 5G aims to increase data communication speed by up to three times, meaning it will have a huge impact on security. As well as allowing data to be processed more quickly, incidents can be reported and responded too more rapidly.
2. Increased cloud solutions – there is a distinct trend away from storing data at premises to utilising cloud technology instead. It is also gratifying to learn that cloud technology companies are spending heavily on improving their security.

I recently heard about a fantastic new app that is supposedly sweeping the nation. It is a location map called what3words.

The company who devised the app claim to have assigned each 3m square in the world a unique 3 word address that will never change. Anyone entering the 3 word address into the app will find that exact location.

For example ///filled.count.soap brings up the entrance to the London headquarters of what3words.

No, I don’t mean for that ‘sorry we missed you’ card or yet another takeaway menu.

Local police have issued a warning after thieves removed the draught excluder from letterboxes at homes in Churchdown.

The idea is that they can then freely fish for keys that may be left lying around in the hallway, as car and house keys often are. If they can hook keys in this way, they can use them to enter the property or steal a car sitting on the driveway.

Gloucestershire Live reported a police spokesman as saying “A number of houses in Cordingley Close area of Churchdown have had the draught excluder removed from their letter boxes. Please check your letterboxes and report to the police if this has happened to you.

I see that the UK’s terrorism threat has officially been lowered from ‘severe’ to ‘substantial’, the lowest level it has been since 2014.

Naturally, this is a good thing, but there can be no doubt that the threat of terrorism is still a real one.

I am very pleased to announce that once again Glevum have been nominated as a finalist for the prestigious Security & Fire Excellence Awards.

We are one of ten nominees for the Corporate Social Responsibility Initiative of the Year. You may remember that we were the winners in this category last year and hope to repeat our success.

As a major employer in Gloucestershire we are acutely aware of our responsibilities in the local community. Our nomination for this award is recognition of our work with local people which makes it one that I am especially proud of.

I don’t know how many of you use iPhones but I was horrified to read of a sustained hacking attack that has been going on for over two years.

Google’s Threat Analysis Team (TAG) came across a small number of hacked websites that were being used in ‘watering hole’ attacks on visitors using iPhones. Watering hole attacks are where the browsing patterns of particular groups are observed in order to lay a trap e.g. hack a website that the particular group visits.

I thought you’d like to know a little more about our employees so this is the first of an occasional feature.

What was your very first job?
My first job was a HGV fitter.

When you were a child, what did you want to be when you grew up?
When I was young I always wanted to be in the armed forces. Unfortunately my knees said no!

What hobbies & interests do you have outside of work?
Off road Motor Cross - that’s my thing!

Where in the world is your favourite place and why?
I would have to say Weymouth! Why? Because this is where my mum always took us for family holidays from a very young age. It will always have a special place in my heart with fond memories.

Elon Musk is an interesting guy. He is described as a technology entrepreneur, investor and engineer. He has Canadian, South African and US citizenship. He is the CEO of SpaceX, Tesla Inc and Neuralink as well as the co-founder of PayPal.

And he’s worried about Artificial Intelligence (AI).

That is why he is developing a brain implant for humans that will link directly with their technology.

This implanted brain-computer interface (BCI) will be known as Neuralink and could be with us within a year. The aim is to provide a low risk and affordable procedure, as non-invasive as laser eye surgery that can be performed quickly and easily by a doctor without needing a stay in hospital.

It actually looks like the Summer might be here at last and I am sure many of you are preparing to go on holiday over the next couple of months.

Now, I don’t want to put a damper on your vacation plans but Burglar Bill and his chums love this time of year too; holidays = vacant properties for them to visit!

You want peace of mind while you are relaxing on the beach or around the pool so what can you do to ensure your home is safe? In this day and age, the answer is to invest in some top security tech.

• CCTV – there is no arguing that HD CCTV is a must for home security. For a start any burglar worth his salt won’t even look at a property if he knows they have CCTV in place. To this end, you may want to put up signs advertising the fact that you have a system. Here are some of the latest additional safety measures that you can take:

o Monitor your home from your smartphone. You can arm or disarm your system at the touch of a button.

Do you want HSTS for your website?

I thought not. What about better security, faster load times and increased SEO?

So you do, eh? Have a definition to start with:

HSTS – HTTP Strict Transport Security. This is a response header that tells your browser that it can only connect to a website using HTTPS. HSTS increases the speed and security of HTTPS websites.

Yes it’s true – Glevum handle the security at the White House.

That’s the White House that is the HQ of Severnside Software Ltd (SSL), not that big one over the pond. We have been pleased to provide security services for them for many years now and we seem to be doing something right.

Roger White, Managing Director of SSL, explains:

“Being a leading IT company physical security is absolutely critical for us and I also like to use local companies. We have used Glevum Security since the beginning of time to look after both business and residential premises and the service has been absolutely fantastic.
